FM Waste Management recently hosted informative tours of the KAUST Waste Transfer Station for the KAUST community on March 6 and 9, and for house helpers on March 2 and 7. The aim was to strengthen our partnership with residents and enhance their understanding of KAUST's waste management program. Attendees gained a firsthand view of the station's daily operations and learned about the waste management processes in place.
The tour commenced with a warm welcome from the FM Waste Management team, followed by an informative introduction to KAUST's waste management program. Participants were then escorted to the operations control room, a digital monitoring hub where the waste management team oversees various operational tasks including waste fleet activities; call center requests; and task progress tracking. This behind-the-scenes glimpse into the control room provided participants with a deeper understanding of the technologies involved in managing waste operations effectively.
Subsequently, the tour proceeded to the recyclable sorting, compaction, and storage area, where participants witnessed firsthand the sorting of approximately 2.5 metric tons of mixed recyclable waste (the average received daily from residential and facility sources).
The waste sorting process involves segregating recyclable materials by various material types such as PET, HDPE, paper, cardboard, ferrous, and non-ferrous metals, while ensuring the removal of any contamination. Participants engaged in interactive discussions with the waste management team, gaining valuable insights into the challenges and best practices associated with waste sorting and management.
During the tours, participants showed appreciation for the FM Waste Management team's dedication to implementing effective waste management practices. This positive engagement and valuable feedback highlighted the critical role of community involvement in sustainability efforts. With the successful opening of the Waste Transfer Station to the KAUST community, FM Waste Management not only enhanced transparency but also inspired residents to contribute actively to environmental conservation.
Looking ahead, similar initiatives, like those planned for the upcoming Global Recycling Day on March 18, will continue to emphasize the significance of such community-led environmental stewardship.
