Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is an opportunity for personal development and creates the possibility for people to maximize the potential within themselves. It promotes self-discipline and increases self-confidence.
Our trainer Karim Shah is a world-class instructor and a very successful athlete. He has achieved multiple gold and silver medals in the most important tournaments worldwide. We have the chance to learn directly from him, the most efficient system of techniques and the mental philosophy of the sport. The class accommodates both beginners and advanced BJJ practitioners. With consistency and repetition, students will learn the fundamentals of the sport and start to develop their own game. Over time and with dedication, practitioners will be graduated to the upper belts, following the BJJ belt system recognized worldwide.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is commonly known by the acronym "BJJ". This is a type of Martial Art that allows the weak to be able to defend against bigger and stronger opponents. It is a form of grappling based on technique and strategy, often compared to a chess game, where the goal is to achieve control of a fight without causing damage to the opponent. See this video for more information.
There are 2 main variants of this martial art: - Sports Jiu-jitsu and Self-defense Jiu-jitsu. At KAUST, we practice the sports variation. There is a set of rules, points are given by a referee, and the rounds usually have a time limit. One can win a BJJ match by points or by submission, making the opponent tap-out using a joint lock or applying a choke. There is no striking in Sports BJJ.
We currently have an adults class going twice a week in KAUST. We are also invited to join a class in Jeddah on Thursdays, in a martial-arts academy, with the same coach. The classes usually follow a routine: Salute the coach and colleagues, warm up, technique exemplified by the coach, and we drill the technique a certain amount of time to muscle-memorize it. At the end of the class, we do a few rounds of sparring. The class is also open to both genders and we are establishing a kids-class from 6 years and above.
