We are pleased to share that KAUST’s Sulaiman Saleh Olayan Institute has been awarded LEED Platinum certification, the highest level of sustainability accreditation, by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
KAUST has been a pioneer in sustainable building, becoming the largest LEED Platinum project in the world at its inauguration in 2009. Sulaiman Saleh Olayan Institute is the first building globally to receive this recognition in 2025 at this level and the Smart Home was the first renovated home outside the USA to achieve this certification in 2022, further cementing KAUST’s reputation as a leader in green initiatives.
Peter Templeton, President of USGBC praised KAUST for its dedication to sustainable design and operations, highlighting its role as a regional ambassador for green building practices.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a globally recognized certification that evaluates buildings based on energy efficiency, water conservation, material use, and indoor environmental quality. Platinum is the highest level, requiring exceptional sustainability standards and performance.
KAUST continues to advance its sustainability efforts by integrating high-performance building standards in all new developments and major renovations. Aligned with the rigorous criteria of LEED Platinum certification, these projects incorporate stringent water and energy efficiency measures, including water-conscious management and recycling systems, enhanced insulation, and smart building technologies to optimize resource consumption.
This milestone was made possible through the collaborative efforts of NTI, HSE, and the Office of Sustainability, and Campus and Community extends its gratitude to all involved.
